These are some of the neat places I've visited in my job as Editor of Freelance News. Hope you find them as useful as I do! - Melanie Rockett

Copyright:

If you are a lawyer or can’t sleep at night try the Canadian Copyright Act

For real insomniacs, the US Copyright Act is better than the biggest of sleeping pills, you can find it at http://www.law.cornell.edu/copyright/copyright.table.html

The Australians have done it right. The Australian Copyright Council has produced a site that is actually interesting and quite useful. Take a peek, a lot of the concepts are the same from country to country. http://www.copyright.org.au

My best recommendation to date can not be found on-line. CANADIAN COPYRIGHT LAW by Lesley Harris is a great guide for writers and photographers, and just about any other creative type you can name. Harris discusses current copyright law in everyday English. She includes the fundamental principles, legal rights and obligations. There is a section on issues relating to multimedia works and the Internet, as well as information about NAFTA, GATT, and Cancopy.

On Line Reference Service

How easy can research get? The Toronto Public Library has a WONDERFUL on-line reference service that you might want to check out. The great little elves at the reference desk will look up:dates, names, spellings, addresses, facts and definitions, brief biographical or historical factual information, locate addresses and phone numbers for businesses, publishers, organizations, associations, government offices and agencies and prominent individuals. They will NOT do in-depth or detailed research for you with this service. The time frame is approximately 24 hours, and does not include weekends. Check out the reference desk

And the Vancouver Library was not to be out done so they've got one too! They will only answer your questions if you are from BC. My question is ... How can they tell where you're from if your address ends with a dot com, or a dot net, or a dot with some other code that isn't a country code? I really hate it when I have questions like that ... it's probably a great question for my mystery-novel detective to ask.

Canada's postal codes lookup

You can buy one of Canada Post's Postal Code Directories and try to figure out how to use it. Or you can phone their 800 line and listen to stuff some people call music and the we'll be with you eventually recording until your patience totally dissolves. Or you can visit Canada Post's nifty lookup page.

I tried out several address and got my postal codes within seconds. VERY handy.

If you are interested in stamps or services click on over to Canada Posts home page. You can purchase stamps on-line and look up rates and even find out the story behind the stamp.

Traveling, or researching a destination?

Whether you are planning a holiday or want to research a location for a book or article there are loads of useful sites, here are a few of them:.

Citynet has descriptions, maps, photos, transportation, lodging, and pretty well any other kind of tourist information you might want. Planning on taking a trip to Timbuktu? Probably NOT a great idea to schedule it for July! Today, it was 103 degrees Fahrenheit in Timbuktu. In Reykjavík, which is somewhere in Iceland it was 59 degrees Fahrenheit ... a little cool, but way easier on the photo equipment.. It's all there at citynet.com, check it out and bookmark it. http://www.citynet.com

I haven't booked with these people YET ... but the deals look good at this new hotel discount site. They offer real-time reservations with guaranteed savings up to 65% off published rates and no advance booking restrictions. 1800usahotels provides an extensive listing of participating properties around the world, and is one of the few to promise no blackout dates and no minimum stay restrictions.

For those who have ever wondered WHY?

The WHY FILES is an electronic look at the science behind the news. This is a perfect research site for people like me (basically, very cat like, exceedingly curious). El Nino has been driving me crazy. It started so long ago I can't remember why it is that everyone blames practically everything on it. So I did a test, and looked it up. And I was right about it starting so long ago ... in the 1500's to be precise. I found that interesting tidbit and a whole lot more. Topics rage all over the map, from wildfires to environmental estrogen's to neutrinos to sports, yes even the science behind sports. It's all well written, very colorful and super informative. And somebody wrote all this stuff! Makes me proud to be a writer. Oh yeah, your kids will probably love this site too!

On-line Dictionaries

Have you ever felt compelled to look up a word in Yiddish? What about Hmong, Ingush, Interlingua or Romany? No? Me neither. But JUST in case you ever do, click on over to the On-Line Dictionaries site. They have over 600 dictionaries in 150 languages just waiting for you.

If you want to know what Rim ember us poke in cent tense all mow stall ways con deigns word snot in ten did means, don't bother going to their fun page because they won't tell you!

Nifty Software for Writers

Whether you write fiction, nonfiction or screenplays the following software bears looking into. WRITER'S BLOCKS is a unique program that provides writers with a fast and easy way to capture, edit, arrange, and organize ideas.

The newest version of Writer's Blocks promises to boost your productivity throughout the creative process, from brainstorming to the final rewrite. Basically, Writer's Blocks is an aide for story development. It is flexible and can be adapted to all writing styles.

A free 30-day trial version of Writer's Blocks 2.0 can be downloaded from the web site. The trial version is a complete working copy of the program with all program features enabled. If you should decide you just can't get along without it after the 30 day trial ... the cost is $99US.
