There are thousands of free government grants available to freelancers and small business owners.

It's interesting how the words "grants" and "freelance" seem to go together. There are virtually thousands of grants of all types and sizes available for freelance business owners. Most of them are government grants, but you may also be elegible for grants from large corporations.

There are grants available to help with almost every aspect of your business -- from funding expansion to paying all or part of the wages of a new employee or intern. There are grants to help with buying new equipment, doing research, developing new areas of expertise, going to conferences and workshops, training and getting a website up and running.

Does your freelance business fit any of the following categories?

  • writer
  • photographer
  • fine art
  • graphic art
  • music production
  • the visual arts
  • literary arts
  • performance arts
  • theater
  • small business startup
  • small business expansion
If it does, you may be eligible for a grant.
At one point in my freelance business I had several workers virtually paid for by a government employment incentive grant. The grant covered the wages and benefits of two Interns. All I had to do was contribute $1.00 an hour and provide meaningful work and training. At the end of the year, I decided to hire one of the Interns. The government provided me with a second grant that helped partially fund that employee for another year. The free government grants helped me grow my business to the point where it was feasible to pay for my new employee.

The biggest challenges with grants are:

  • finding the programs you qualify for

  • writing the grant application package so that you GET the grant!

I found out about the availability of the employment grants through my accountant. I had to pay for his consultation time to find out about the grants and to get help in applying for the grants. The several hundred dollars I invested was money well spent.

Though you can find grants by doing extensive searches on the Internet, contacting government departments, or though word of mouth, the simplest route is to search the various grant directories.

Developing a grant directory is a huge amount of work. There are thousands of grants to track, new ones are constantly being added, grant programs come to an end or they may change significantly. It takes thousands of hours to find them, rate them, and compile the relevant information. This is why you don't see many (any?) companies giving away the information for free. The membership fees you will pay are small in comparison to what I paid my accountant! Getting just one grant will MORE than pay for your access to the directories.

Here are several grant directories along with a short description as to what you can expect.
