Photography, perhaps more than any other medium, seems inextricably linked to an increasingly complex modern world constantly unfolding in new and unexpected ways. Its ability to capture our cultural changes, the environments we inhabit, and the thoughts we keep play a vital role in giving us greater insights into our world and ourselves. In the 2014 Center Forward exhibit, we are interested in exploring this unique quality of photography; therefore, the theme is open and all subject matter is welcome.

JUROR | Hamidah Glasgow

The exhibition is open to all photographers world wide, both amateur and professional. The Center invites photographers working in all mediums, styles and schools of thought to participate in its exhibitions.

Description Color in photography has symbolism and meaning that travels beyond what you see.

More than the combination of red, green, and blue or cyan, magenta, yellow, and black, color is a visual tool for non-verbal communication: a viewer's perception and connection to an image can be significantly enhanced by a certain hue.

Strip away the subject matter from a photograph, and what is left behind? Two things. The underlying geometry of the photo, its composition or balance, and the color. The design and geometry make an image coalesce, become solid, and enduring. Whereas the color carries the opposite message, one of transience and impermanence. That's because colors are not inherent in objects, but change and evolve with the changing light - and we photographers know, light is always changing.

Hues must contrast or complement one another to create a successful image, a delicate dance of visual balance. For this exhibit we are looking for works that exemplify the innate power of color. Images that drive us through hue to an emotive response.

Juror: Al Satterwhite

Entry Fee $25
Description While millions of photographs are taken daily and posted to Facebook, Flickr, Instagram, and other image sharing services, only a small fraction tell a narrative story and a smaller number would be considered documentary. For this call for entries, SDN is seeking submissions that create a coherent documentary narrative, first with the images and then providing necessary context with text and optionally, sound and motion. All themes, subject matter, and formats are encouraged.

This is the first SDN call for entries where multimedia submissions will be eligible. Photography is no longer just the domain of the static image. Multimedia has become an important and effective tool for still photographers to add a time-based narrative element, combining motion, text, sound, music, and voice with still and moving images.

All entries must have between 6 and 24 photographs related to a specific theme. The submission may also have a multimedia component to supplement the still images. Submissions must also have an abstract to provide context (150 words maximum) and captions to accompany the photographs. Additional text about the situation being documented may also be entered, as well as a bio, and information on organizations working with affected communities.

Photographs must have been taken after January 1, 2009.
