The Society of Biology 2014 Photo Contest

Deadline July 31, 2014

Eligibility International   18+
Prizes Photographer of the Year (over 18) - 1000 sterling top prize

Young Photographer of the Year (18 and under) - 500 sterling top prize
Entry Fee Free
Description This years' theme invites amateur photographers to think creatively about the unique ways animals, plants and organisms exploit their environment in order to survive. Photographs could focus on biology research which helps to answer the complex question of why and how different organisms survive in diverse environments; or, could simply capture the beauty of an animal in its natural environment.

This may be an orca whale in the cold coastal waters of the polar regions; or a parasitic worm that settles within the gut of another organism. Your photograph could give insight to the laborious task a beaver undertakes to build its dam, or the resourceful dormancy of the fat-tailed dwarf lemur. We hope this years' theme will inspire insight into biodiversity, conservation issues and genetic diversity.

We are also welcoming entries that explore this theme at the molecular or sub-cellular level, illustrating the complex physiology or genetic factors that influence survival instinct and habitat selection. These could be biomedical images or photomicrography using any type of light microscope techniques, including: darkfield, brightfield, two-photon fluorescence or confocal imaging.

There are 2 categories in the competition, each with a cash prize:

Photographer of the Year (over 18)
Young Photographer of the Year (18 and under)

Description Motto

The mountains with their impressive dimensions and sometimes intimidating shapes have always caused controversial feelings in human beings. For some they have a rather frightfully monumental effect, other are fascinated and attracted by them. The mountain appears immutable. It is the interplay with the nature, which creates always new perspectives and captivating spectacles.

Earth. Water. Air. Fire. The four elements shape the rock and design new and spectacular forms. Venture out, to the most remote places on earth, looking for particular snapshots of the mountain in play with one or more of the 4 elements. Thunderstorms, clouded sky, pristine springs, ice needles, ray of sunlight, lava flows and more... The 4 elements present themselves in endless forms and acts. But don΄t forget the protagonist of your picture should be the mountain.
