Description Photographers have a wonderful ability to turn ordinary surroundings into an otherworldly realm. Optical illusions, chemistry, and the mechanics of modern tools, have opened new possibilities for artists to untether their imaginations. Artists exploring make-believe use their dreams and memories as subject matter. Their work distorts reality, making everyday objects and environments alien and magical. Photographers construct their own fantasies, creating alternate worlds that straddle the line between reality and fiction. For Fact and Fantasy, The Kiernan Gallery seeks images that explore the unearthly and strange.

Description Science without Borders Challenge is a yearly science competition that engages secondary students to promote public awareness of the need to preserve, protect, and restore the world's oceans and aquatic resources through various forms of media, such as science videos and art projects.

In 2013, the Foundation held its first Science without Borders Challenge science competition. High school students around the world were asked to answer the question, how are we all connected to the oceans?

Students were asked to submit a 1-5 minute science video presentation that could include any combination of interviews, comic storyboards, photography, and original footage to answer the challenge question. The submission conveyed a connection between everyday life and our oceans that could serve as a public service announcement to other students, teachers, parents, and the general public.

The theme for this year's Science without Borders Challenge is 'Protect Our Coral Reefs.' The Foundation invites you to submit your art projects.

Description This year's contest drew entrants from a record 84 countries, as well as from a diverse range of academic and professional disciplines. Winners came from such fields as chemistry, biology, materials research, botany, and biotechnology.

A photomicrograph is a technical document that can be of great significance to science or industry. But a good photomicrograph is also an image whose structure, color, composition, and content is an object of beauty, open to several levels of comprehension and appreciation.

The Nikon Small World Competition is open to anyone with an interest in photography through the microscope. Truly international in scope, entries have been received from the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia, Latin America, Asia, and Africa. Winners have included both professionals and hobbyists.

The subject matter for this year's contest is unrestricted and any type of light microscopy technique is acceptable, including phase contrast, polarized light, fluorescence, interference contrast, darkfield, confocal, deconvolution, and mixed techniques. Entries submitted to Nikon are then judged by an independent panel of experts who are recognized authorities in the area of photomicrography and photography. These entries are judged on the basis of originality, informational content, technical proficiency and visual impact.

Entries may be submitted either on film (in 35 millimeter transparency format) or uploaded digitally through your web browser. The links below provide options for entering the contest.

Living With Environmental Change Health Climate Change Photo Competition

Deadline April 30, 2014
Theme Digital
Eligibility International   18+
Prizes Prizes will be the winner's choice of Jessops photographic or John Lewis gift vouchers to the value of:

1st: 200 GBP
2nd: 100 GBP
3rd: 50 GBP
Entry Fee Free
Description Could your photographic prowess contribute to protecting vulnerable people in the UK from climate impacts?

LWEC needs help illustrate scientific information it produces for government, agencies and services across the UK with powerful images.

It is currently producing a climate change impacts report card for the UK Health Sector. The first in the series of such cards was about climate impacts on UK biodiversity. It appeared on Channel Four News and has been downloaded, read and used by thousands of people and organisations. We hope the health card will be as popular.

However, the Health Climate Change Impacts Report Card needs to be as attractive as the Biodiversity Card (see http://www.lwec.org.uk/resources/report-cards.) But because few images exist to bring the card to life, LWEC is running a photographic competition to generate a pool of images to help publically funded scientists put across vital information for people and services in the Health Sector.

Themes
The card will be published in July 2014 and will focus on the following themes:

1. Disease transmitted by vectors (mosquitoes, ticks)
2. Warmer winters
3. Warmer summers
4. Flooding
5. Environmental quality/pollution (contamination of soil, water)
6. Food safety
7. Outdoor air quality
8. Impacts on health and social systems
9. Social and health inequalities
10. Long term impacts on human populations (ecosystem services, food production, sea level rise etc.) Will you enter this challenging competition to engage readers in these topics?
